Fundamentals of Fiction Writing

with Stephen Amidon

29 APRIL – 1 JULY 2021 LIVE STREAMING  WRITING

This course will provide a solid, pragmatic and inspirational introduction to the fundamentals of writing readable, compelling fiction. It will enable the new writer to gain a working understanding of the tools needed to create the story s/he has always wanted to tell. Over a period of ten weeks, we will use exercises, discussions and outside reading to help each student get the first draft of that short story, or opening chapter of the novel, they have been itching to write.

The course will be conducted as an online workshop, during which each student’s writing will be read and analyzed, not just by the instructor, but by the entire class. We will break storytelling down to its various parts, which we will then reassemble to create a compelling whole. The importance of crisis and conflict will be explored, as will narrative techniques such as voice, backstory, foreshadowing, flashback, imagery and figures of speech. There will be a special emphasis on re-writing, an essential but often neglected part of the process. By course’s end, the new writer will have what it takes to start working.

There will be a cloud platform dedicated to the class, where students will be able to download documents as well as upload exercises and watch recordings of lessons.

We can also share the video of the free opening masterclass of this course: email us at europe@scuolaholden.it.
